這首民謠有很多版本和名字，The Daemon Lover(魔鬼情人)是比較廣為人知的歌名，其他還有James Harris、A Warning for Married Women(給已婚婦女的告誡)、The Distressed Ship Carpenter(憂傷船匠)、 James Herries、 The Carpenter’s Wife(木匠之妻)、The Banks of Italy(義大利沿岸)，或是 The House-Carpenter (木匠)的版本，最早可追溯至17世紀中期，被認為是對已婚婦女的警告，帶有不要對另一半不忠的寓意。
這些版本的故事架構多大同小異，基本上描述著一名惡魔去找他已婚的舊情人，告訴她自己是如何地愛她，甚至為她放棄一國的公主。女人愛著作為木匠的丈夫，質疑這位情人能帶給她怎麼樣的保障。惡魔以自己擁有十餘艘船與千人的船員加以引誘，女子便丟下襁褓中的孩子和丈夫，跟著情人上了船。他們航行了數天，最後惡魔露出真面目使船沉沒。原以為舊情人要帶她前往天堂般的生活，想不到目的地其實是地獄。
